How to apply:

SEARCH Application Process and Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must currently be enrolled full time in a graduate program at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and must be returning to the School as a full time graduate student in the Fall of 2010. Priority will be given to those students required to complete a practicum for their degree program or who plan to use this opportunity for their master’s paper or doctoral dissertation.
Application requirements:

  1. Completed SEARCH application form
  2. Resume or CV
  3. 2 recommendations: 1 from academic advisor and 1 from former employer or professional recommendation
  4. Current official transcript (must be provided directly to OGH by campus or departmental registrar)

A faculty committee from the School will review the applications and make a preliminary recommendation to SEARCH. SEARCH will make the final decision on the selected students.

Application materials are due to the Office of Global Health by 5:00pm on Friday, January 29, 2010. Submit completed application materials electronically to ogh@unc.edu.
Please indicate in all forms of communication (application, transcript, recommendations) which internship you are applying for (India or Peru).

SEARCH Internship Information :

2-3 graduate students will be selected for the summer of 2010. In their applications, students must indicate their preference of at least 1, and no more than 2 projects, from the following list (details for each project can be found in the linked Word Documents):

The internships opportunities are (Word documents):

  1. Relation of number of home visits and newborn survival in Rural India
  2. Diagnosis and management of common health ailments in villages in Rural India (a team of 2-3 students is welcome to work jointly on this)
  3. Descriptive epidemiology of tobacco consumption during pregnancy in Rural India
  4. Cost of averting newborn death by a community based intervention package in Rural India
  5. Behavioural change and communication strategy for tobacco addiction in rural India (a team of 2 students welcome)
  6. Impact of washing cord with Chlorohexidine on neonatal sepsis and mortality in Rural India
  7. Formative research for back pain and musculoskeletal disorders in Rural India (a team of 2 students welcome)

The Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), in partnership with the Office of Global Health (OGH) at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, is accepting applications for summer internship opportunities for graduate students at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health for summer 2010 in Gadchiroli, India.

SEARCH approaches community health by identifying the needs of people, developing models that empower the community to meet these requirements, testing these models using rigorous research methods, and making them publicly available.
